The Around in Ten Support Boat . . . . .

A 38ft steel Roberts Spray skippered by Nick Dwyer

On April 24, 1895, at the age of 51, Joshua Slocum departed Boston in his 36ft “Spray” and sailed around the world single-handed, a passage of 46,000 miles. Returning to Newport, Rhode Island on June 27, 1898 he became the first to solo circumnavigate.

This historic achievement made him the patron saint of small-boat voyagers, navigators and adventurers all over the world.

The support boat pictured here is a steel “Spray”  38. Although the original Spray was a Yawl the support boat is a Ketch.

She is currently lying in Portugal undergoing a refit and skipper Nick Dwyer will sail south to the Canaries before crossing the Atlantic in November 2008 to make the start line. Prior to launching she will be renamed during a ceremony paying respects to and celebrating both Neptune & Aeolus

The support boat will be fitted with a SSB radio and will transmit coverage of the race on a regular basis to this web site.
